Spent some time last night flipping though some Defenders issues pencilled by Sal Buscema. Such wonderful work he did in the early 70’s. Basic, solid, exciting, action packed superheroes! His work always had a formula, that after a while was very familiar, but always inviting. You knew you were going to get a solid exciting story with Sal Buscema. And characters yelling. His characters always yelled. Peter Parker, Valkyrie, Captain America, and of course, The Hulk (with spit trails). And I suppose ROM was yelling behind his helmet or whatever he wore.
So, of course I had to do some Buscema homage. Being a fan and collector of The Defenders in the late’70s, and a fan of Valkyrie, I had to get one done and out
of my system. Why light brown tone, and blue linework? Hard to say. More thinking and experimenting with oddball color choices and I like the vibration the light, electric blue gives off.
Valkyrie doesn’t take crap from any man. Or monster. Wonder what ever became of her?
Yes, they all yelled, even when having a conversation.
